I booked an 8-hour shared charter with Whipsaw Sport Fishing on April 16th, and it turned into a 10-hour, once-in-a-lifetime experience.
From the start, everything was handled professionally. Booking was easy, communication was clear, and when the trip was at risk due to low headcount, Whipsaw went out of their way to make it happen. They actively worked to fill the remaining spots and followed through. That level of effort stood out.
Captain Mike and Blake (crew) were outstanding. We left right on time, the orientation was simple and efficient, and they made everyone comfortable immediately. The boat was well-equipped, organized, and clearly built for serious fishing.
The day started slow. We trolled for 4–5 hours without a hit, but the crew never let up. They kept adjusting the spread, stayed locked in, and worked like something big was coming.
Then things turned.
We hooked a large mahi mahi but lost it at the boat. Shortly after, we landed a solid tuna, followed by another strike that got away. At that point, it was already a good day.
Then the fish of a lifetime hit.
What followed was about a 1+ hour battle with a monster. Every time we gained line, the fish took it back. Throughout the entire fight, Captain Mike and Blake operated like an oiled machine. Constant coaching, precise boat positioning, and disciplined line management. They knew exactly how to handle a fish of that size and never let the situation get out of control.
When we finally got it to the boat, it was a 540 lb, 11’11” blue marlin.
There is no scenario in which that fish gets landed without an experienced captain, a skilled crew, and the right boat and gear working together.
Even on the way back in, they didn’t shut it down. Lines went back in the water, and we landed a 20 lb wahoo (ono) to finish the day. By the time we returned to the dock, it was over a 10-hour trip.
Bottom line: highly professional operation, relentless work ethic, and a crew that executes when it matters. If you’re serious about fishing in Oahu, Whipsaw is the right choice.

An outstanding fishing trip awaits you here. Big and heavy Cabo 35 well maintianed supplies a comfortable ride, air conditioned salon, nice size fridge, clean head, music and ice chest. There is plenty of cockpit space for stand up, fight from the chair, or the gunnel. There is seating in the cockpit and in the cabin/salon. The vessel has a full compliment of US Coast Guard approved safety gear aboard.
Capt Mike Rush and Mate Blake Shew have a great customer focus and are very friendly.
Our party had a mix of seasoned offshore fishing people and newcomers. The Capt and Mate made everyone comfortable and very relaxed. No yelling here.
The Mate stayed busy the whole day with the widest variety of lures and tactics I have ever witness. Bled all our catches for improved taste and freshness. We put 10 quality mahi and 3 yellow fin tuna in the fish box that held more than enough ice to insure our catch stayed fresh. The Capt and friends cleaned and packed our fish at the dock at days end.
I will guarantee this will be one of the best fishing charters you’ve ever taken. It was for us in 40 years of experience. Come aboard with confidense, you’ll love. It’s all good here.

My experience on the Whipsaw Charter boat with Captain Will and First mate Ed was better than I could have ever imagined. I’ll start out saying I have never been to Oahu before and never have been deep sea fishing on the ocean, so I really was taking a chance booking with them. I booked 2 private charters on 2 separate days, just me, one female on the boat and I felt completely safe and comfortable both days. Both Captain Will and First mate Ed were so professional and knowledgeable and taught me exactly what to do and how to do it with ease. They made the time on the boat genuinely enjoyable. Most importantly they got fish on the boat and a dream of mine come true, 2 Mahi Mahi and 1 Ono (wahoo). I will remember this experience forever because of these two and hope to one day come back just to go on the Whipsaw with them again. What an amazing experience! We booked them for our trip this past Sat 1 July 2023 on a shared experience. Never knowing not only how amazing and fun Captain James and Deckhand Tom were going to be but also all the amazing fish we caught 5 Mahi Mahi 3 Ahi (smaller tuna) and a massive 100 lb Yellow Fin Tuna. It was always on our bucket list to go deep sea fishing and just catch one fish let alone that many on our trip. It is an experience we will never forget and got to meet some great people on the trip as well. Thank you Capt James and Tom for a fun filled day and experience of a lifetime!!! We booked a charter for a full day and the ride out was so dreamy! On the way out Tom was demonstrating how to work the reels and how each rod rotates between the 6 of us, upon doing so, one the reels snapped and had a fish hooked! It was reeled in and a good size catch! Unfortunately, we were not able to catch anything else after that, BUT the crew was trying their hardest to hook something, they even asked if we were ok to stay out a little longer to try other spots. No luck, but it happens and it’s not their fault. At the end of the charter they asked us if we wanted to take home fish, which we did and it was absolutely delicious! Thank you Captain Will and Tom, we will be back and book with you again!!! 🙂
Just got back from a 6 hr charter my family of 6 had a great time! 1st experience sport fishing got a 25lb skipjack tuna! Captain Teoni and Thomas were great! Even found out the heart of the tuna is the best part!lol even though we only caught 1 fish it was worth it! Would definitely book again!Mahola!
Been on plenty of sport fishing charters across the world and this definitely topped them all! Capt Will and 1st mate Ed and deckhand Kahi were amazing. Went out for a full day and caught the Hawaii sport fishing trifecta: blue marlin, ono, and a yellowfin. Hooked up on that marlin within the 1st hour of the charter and it set the tone for the day. Released it and went on to catch 3 aku (skipjack), and one ono (wahooo), and one shibi (tiny yellowfin/Ahi). The entire crew was very welcoming and took the time to explain where we were heading, fish we might catch in the area, and asking us which we’d like to target. Not to mention we landed every fish we hooked up on, couldn’t have asked for a better experience.
Capt Will and the whipsaw set us up for the fishing trip of a lifetime, within a hour and half of leaving the dock we were hooked on a blue Marlin. the deckhands and capt Will encouraged and cheered us on the whole battle, definitely a trip I won’t forget!

You know it was a great day when you hit the marina and bystanders start cheering for you as they see your fish flag display! Had a great time on the Whipsaw, crew was fantastic & fishing was great. Captain Will & deck boss Ed helped us at every step. Ed spent time to explain the tackle set up& show us techniques that he has learned. The crew worked hard , kept changing lures to help us with our chances. We had a great day with a beautiful variety pack including blue marlin (released) , aku, ono and yellow fin tuna. Captain Will expertly cleaned, fileted and baged as much fish as were wanted. We had a great trip with Captain Will and deck hand Ed. This was my wife’s first time on a charter and they did a great job teaching her what to expect. They even went out the night before and caught bait and saved us that time for our trip. Would definitely recommend and go back. We caught 12 Mahi and a small skipjack tuna.
We went to Hawaii for our 25th anniversary and decided to go fishing on the Whipsaw because of Will and his you tube videos ( Will does Hawaii). We just happened to pick the right day and the best crew!! We ended up with 4 huge Ahi (149, 143, 113, and 113 lbs.), 9 Mahi, and got to fight a Blue Marlin all the way, until about 50 yards from the boat when the hook pulled! My wife got a pic of it as it was jumping! We had a Manta Ray swimming behind the boat as I was fighting one of the Ahi, crazy how big they are!! Had a mutual agreement to call it a day after the 4th Ahi, as there was no more room left for another fish, all the ice was gone, and we couldn’t reel anymore if we wanted to!! Went to Hawaii with a dream to have a chance at a big Ahi, Will and Ed made that dream come true with their knowledge and passion for fishing and maybe a little luck!! They went above and beyond our expectations!! Highly recommend booking with them!! Thanks again for an epic day aboard the Whipsaw!!! Can’t wait to do it again someday and land that Marlin!!

This was a fantastic trip. Took my son for his first time. Boat was awesome, crew was better. Felt like I was fishing with friends. Their knowledge and expertise were top notch. In addition to great fishing, we saw pilot whales, dolphins, and even a sea turtle. I will definitely book with them again.
6 of us chartered a 6 hour fishing trip on the “Play n Hooky” boat. The captain and crew were very friendly, informative and helpful. Even when three of us got sea sick and started filling up buckets.
We did get onto one fish but it unfortunately shook the bait loose but it was quickly followed up by a trophy Mahi-Mahi. The Mahi-Mahi came in at 45 pounds and 63 inches long. The crew was right there with you giving you information on what to do and how to land the fish.
I would highly recommend anyone visiting Honolulu to book your deep sea fishing with these guys. If we ever get to come back we will book again with them.

Captain James and mate Ed did a great job getting us out on Saturday after our earlier in the week charter was canceled due to rough weather. The boat was very well maintained and plenty of room. It’s exhilarating to hear a giant fishing reel spooling off line. Had a marlin on for a bit about half way through the day and a couple other bites as well. Ended up landing a really nice 25lb mahi on our way back to the harbor. If you have the time I’d book these guys and maybe you can have a trophy for your wall or Instagram!

Had a great time!!!! Crew was beyond hospitable. Our group of four not only had great luck fishing but had the best time out on the water all day long. Come prepared, dress in layers, and don’t forget snacks and drinks to last the day. All but guaranteed to have a blast.
Payed for a full day charter with my friends came back with a cooler full of fish and I got to cross off catching a blue marlin on off my list I’ve been with 2 other boats here and this is by far the best boat best crew they coached me and help me land my marlin. Have been out on the Whipsaw twice. Amazing crew and time! Will and Ed are great. We caught four Shibi and two Mahi this trip. Last trip we caught a Mahi and Shortbill Spearfish. Will processed all the meat when we got back. Amazing experience!

Captain Will and Firstmate Ed excel at guiding guests in their fishing charters. We did a 6-hr tour which resulted in a Marlin strike and landing a variety of fish!
This was our 3rd Charter on the Whipsaw and we have two more scheduled for this year. I am scheduling 5 trips for next year. This crew is like family and next year they will meet the our extended family!
They work at getting you into the fish, and landing them! I fished with two other companies and the employees of these companies did not worked as hard as Capt Will and Ed to find the fish. One that failed us felt like a 6-hr tour!
I read a review where a guest did not catch fish. That happens; it should be no reflection on the crew of the boat if they are working to get you fish.
If I could give Capt Will and Ed 10-stars, I would!

We have gone on four or five trips with the Whipsaw crew over the past several years and each trip was fantastic.
The Whipsaw crew really have their sea legs! They get everything set and rigged asap. They also will jump immediately into action when anyone gets a bite on a line.
Captain Will knows the areas and will go out of his way when there are signs of fish. Whether it’s a few miles off the coast or 25 miles out to the trenches, he knows how to get the best out of your charter!

Wow, such a great experience!! We took the whole family and we ALL had such a blast….even our 7 year old twins had a great time. Brendan and Teoni were phenomenal!! Our 15 year old caught a blue marlin in the first hour. And then my husband caught a mahi-mahi. Brendan took the time to bring the little fish that the big fish were actively eating when we caught them to our kids and they were thrilled(so was I!). Thank you so much for such a great experience…..we will definitely do it again when we are back in Hawaii!!

I had a good time on Whipsaw with captain James and Ed. I did a 1/2 day shared charter and we ended up with 3 aku and 1 mahi. We lost a second mahi at the boat. The guys were nice, professional, and had a good sense of the structure beneath us. They were determined to get us on some bigger fish and we stayed out an extra 30 min which was great because that’s when we found the mahi. The boat and gear were all in great condition and I would definitely book again with these guys. They filleted the fish up for us and I took it straight home for aku sashimi and a mahi dinner.
Will and Ed (and Will’s dad!) were an awesome and knowledgeable crew. They knew where to look for big fish. They were super friendly and professional. Will cleaned our Mahi Mahi like a champ. The Whipsaw is a clean vessel and offers the perfect sport fishing charter experience. We’ll be back!
This is a Top Notch crew and they work the hardest to put you on fish in the right places. Will and Ed know their stuff we couldn’t have been more satisfied with the experience.
Capitan Will and First Mate Ed are great to work with. They are very pleasant to be around and are also very helpful during the whole trip. We were able to get a blue marlin and a nice Mahi while out, while other boats back at the harbor looked like they got skunked.
My uncle came out with us too, who has a lot of experience deep sea fishing the area, he said that these guys are the real deal and are very good. I have to agree.

Went fishing for my birthday and was not disappointed. Did a full day of fishing on the Play n Hooky with captain Teoni and deckhand Brendon. We caught 1 blue marlin and a stripped marlin, as well as 5 mahi mahi. Great experience would recommend.
I highly recommend Whipsaw fishing to anyone visiting Waikiki. Will responded to my call right away and got me setup on a shared charter. He communicated the day before to confirm and it made finding the boat at the dock very easy. Teoni and Brendon were both very professional, knowledgeable and took great care of us. We started fishing right away and even caught a Marlin!! The whole experience was amazing and absolutely worth it!

After doing some research to find a boat to charter for fishing while staying n Honolulu I decided to pick whipsaw sportfishing.
And they did not fail me only to exceed my expectations.
My captain was James and his deck hand was Ed and they both had the experience and skill to make my trip the most amazing fishing trip I have yet to have gone on.
We had a plan of the target fish I wanted and it was blue marlin so they had everything rigged up ready for the intended target fish I wanted.
45 minutes out we were into the first blue marlin and the battle was on and I must caution you to be aware these marlins will give you a battle of a lifetime and you will never know what real exhaustion feels like until you battle a large blue marlin.
Needless to say captain James and his Deckhand kept everything running smoothly and they both were great guys to get to visit with while fishing we battled another larger blue marlin and got him close to the boat and lost him at the last minute but got plenty of video and pics of him and we were planning on releasing him anyway.
I did catch a really nice skipper jack as well.
Fishing is very unpredictable what can happen some days your successful at getting your target fish and other days not so, it’s part of the game but this trip I was the winner and a very successful trip I will never forget.
Next year I will come back and charter with Whipsaw Sportfishing again.
And hopefully get to have captain James and Ed as my crew these guys are good if not some of the best at this game.

This is one thing my husband has always wanted to do, so I sent my husband, son and son in-law out for the day, and was it worth it. They had the best time, could not say enough about the crew, professional, helpful, fun. All 3 caught fish and we were lucky enough to have the son in-law cook some up for us that night. Highly recommend and they cannot wait to do it again.
First and foremost, I will be going on another fishing trip with Will and Ed, these guys are not only good but they also are very professional and go the extra mile to make sure you get your money’s worth.
We planned this trip so my father in-law could go with us who is in a wheel chair with only one arm. I called and emailed before we booked, Will was not only very responsive but also very willing to help us get him on the boat and get him fishing.
We got my father in-law on the boat and headed out. It was a great trip and everyone felt very comfortable on the boat.
I called other chapters and most didn’t want to work with us to see if we could get the wheel chair on the boat, Will was very helpful and even let us come by to make sure before the charter to make sure we could get it on the boat.
If anyone in your party has different abilities then you need to do yourself a favor and call and talk to Will and get a charter with Whipsaw!!
It may have been pouring rain but that’s always when my luck is best so don’t let that hold you back. Today was no exception. I got the first Mahi 20 minutes into the day. Then a very large Blue Marlin an hour later. Then 2 more Mahi before my final catch of a short billed Spear Fish. Capt Teoni and deckhand Brenden on the Play N Hooky.

Went deep sea fishing for the first time with Whipsaw Sportfishing. Even though I got seasick once and two other family members got seasick, catching a 45 pound, 63 inch Mahi-Mahi made it all worth it.
The crew was great and very helpful throughout the 6 hour trip. I would highly recommend booking with Whipsaw for any deep sea fishing. Maybe someday in the future I can come back and try to catch a bigger Mahi.

Had a great day on the water with Captain Mike and Ed. They were very knowledgeable of the area and the types of fish. They were able to get some fish onboard for us and also caught and released a shark. Enjoyed talking with Ed, seeing dolphins and a sea turtle during the trip as well. I would definitely recommend Whipsaw if you are looking to fish while in Honolulu.
Absolutely amazing time out here with Whipsaw Sportfishing! Joe and Jeff were the best helping us every step of the way! I strongly recommend everyone to go for the full day trip to enjoy trolling and chance to catch the most fish for as long as possible. I caught an 11 ft 370 lb Blue Marlin took me 2 hours to reel in! Worth every minute of us being out there on the water!

The captain and deckhand on the Whipsaw gave me my best deep sea fishing trip yet. the crew is highly knowledgeable and knew how to bring the fish in the boat. They also were very sociable and made me feel comfortable. A productive day catching 6 mahi mahi, and 1 small tuna. A definite 5 star rating, thanks

We had an awesome day with the Whipsaw crew! Neither of us had done a fishing charter before and the crew was very knowledgeable and helpful. Both my boyfriend and I caught a tuna and got to enjoy a day on the beautiful blue waters of Hawaii. 10/10 recommend!
Will and his crew (Thomas & Nate) did a fantastic job showing us a great time while making sure everyone stayed safe. They were very professional but just as enthusiastic as we were when we hooked into fish. It was a great day catching a bunch of fish! Couldn’t believe I got to land a spearfish!
Captain James came through! I had friends visiting from the mainland and booked the Whipsaw because they have one of the best catch rates for Honolulu charter boats. Captain James gave a safety orientation and then we were underway. 1st mate Nate gave an awesome fishing orientation that included info for the novice & experienced fisherman. The trend for the week we went was that most boats weren’t catching so I prepared my mainland friends for possibly a long boat ride. However Captain James brought us into one of the largest aku piles I had ever seen. Along with four other boats, we worked the pile but unfortunately they weren’t biting but what an amazing site to get to witness. Even if we didn’t hook up, I was already satisfied. Over the course of the day we had two knockdowns, one of which was marlin and 1st mate Nate aggressively reeled and free spooled to see if the marlin would give us a second chance to hook up but it just didn’t happen. Towards the end of the day we decided to run the 40 fathom ledge heading back to dock to see if we could catch an ono. Much to our surprise we ended up hooking up and landing a 20 pound yellowfin tuna. A very happy ending for a full day of fishing. The crew cleaned the fish so there was sashimi for everyone. I have been on many charter boats but in all my years, the Whipsaw is one of the nicest boats with a very hospitable crew. I booked their boat two other times and fished with Captain Will & 1st mate Tom and they as well are true professionals. On top of it all, the air conditioned cabin is a nice treat to beat the heat. I will definitely book the Whipsaw in the future.
What a WONDERFUL experience. Captain Will and Tom made our morning trip exactly what we were hoping for.
Calm atmosphere while being personable, educational and enjoying some laughs. We had a few bites but ended our day catching a good sized Ono which made our day!!
I will say Will and Tom went above and beyond- we discussed fishing traditions, life stories, points of interest for our vacation as well as different ways to cook/eat our catch!
I believe they went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed our charter experience as well as leaving with a fond, memorable experience.
10/10 would recommend to friends/family/ strangers they were just that great.
Will & Tom are an awesome team- if you’re lucky enough to book them, then you’re very lucky indeed.

The day started out a little slow but ended up with a triple blue marlin to finish off the day! The guys never gave up and it was amazing to see three fish hit at once and bring all three in!
